Visibility into Workflow for Non-Administrative Users

As a standard user, I need to have better visibility into the progress of a workflow where I have an assigned task.  There are many workflows and participants in these workflows and as a user, I need to be able to plan my work so that I can anticipate when I will be needed to move the process forward.  As the standard user, I would be alerted to an activity to which I am assigned and then:

1. I would have a view into the entire workflow

2. In that workflow, items that are not assigned to me or to my role would be available in a view only capability, to assure that I am only able to take actions on items for which I am assigned

    I see that the status is still listed as Submitted. Can I get an update on whether this is being considered?
