I need a little more information to understand your idea.
Are you asking for server auth based on the root/intermediate certificate? When the server presents it's cert to the client, it should not require the client to have server's leaf certificate.
Or are you asking for the client to present the leaf certificate to the server? And for the server to authenticate the client cert using the root cert?
